Google Wallet Now Supports California IDs and Driver’s Licenses
Google Wallet continues to expand its functionality, and now, California residents can store their IDs and driver’s licenses in the app. This new feature allows citizens to securely add these documents, making everyday tasks more convenient.
The latest version of Google Wallet lets users in California upload their IDs as part of a pilot program, currently limited to 1.5 million users. To get started, you need an Android 8.0 or newer smartphone with Bluetooth and Nearby device permissions enabled. This allows the app to share your ID with relevant entities securely. One of the privacy-friendly features includes the ability to select specific information from your ID to share, rather than providing full access.
Importantly, government-issued IDs stored in Google Wallet don’t sync with your Google account. They remain tied to your phone, meaning you will need to re-add them if you switch devices. For verification, a quick selfie video is sent to the DMV, after which confirmation is received via email.
