Sources reveal that Apple plans to equip the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with 12GB of RAM, a first for the iPhone lineup. The increase will allow for smoother performance in demanding applications, especially those involving generative AI and high-performance gaming. However, the standard iPhone 17 and the rumored iPhone 17 Air are expected to retain the 8GB RAM setup, as Apple faces ongoing supply chain limitations.

Samsung Secures Majority of RAM Orders

According to a report by ETNews, Samsung Electronics has locked in 70% of Apple’s DRAM orders for this 12GB upgrade. Samsung, already a key OLED panel supplier for iPhones, is now expanding its footprint into Apple’s memory supply chain. This marks a deeper collaboration between the two tech giants, despite being competitors in the smartphone market.

Other Key Suppliers: SK hynix and Micron

To meet rising demand and balance costs, Apple is also working with SK hynix and Micron, who are expected to share the remaining 30% of RAM supply. Apple’s move to diversify suppliers may help the company manage costs, as 12GB modules are reportedly 50% more expensive than the 8GB variant.

Samsung may rely on support from its Electro-Mechanics division, while SK hynix could partner with LG Innotek, and Micron with Shinko Electric of Japan. These collaborations aim to ensure stable production and delivery ahead of the iPhone 17 launch cycle.

Base Models May Miss Out on Upgrade

Although initial speculation suggested a full lineup upgrade, top analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that unless Apple resolves its DRAM supply constraints, only the Pro models will benefit from the 12GB bump.
